Do You Share Ancient Irish DNA? Find Out With GEDmatch

Do you share DNA with any of the four ancient Irish samples on GEDmatch? You can compare your DNA to Neolithic and Bronze Age remains uncovered in Northern Ireland. Here’s how to go about it.

How To Research Ancient Irish DNA Samples on GEDmatch

We have another article on using GEDmatch to research Neanderthal and other Archaic DNA samples. GEDmatch has a dedicated tool called “Archaic DNA Matches” to compare your DNA against a collection of specific samples.

However, the ancient Irish samples are not part of the Archaic DNA collection.

The Irish samples were pepared by Matt Kitching using the same techniques and uploaded as individual DNA kits to GEDmatch.

So, you will use the standard one-to-one comparison tool on GEDmatch to compare your DNA with each kit. There is a step-by-step tutorial in this article that takes you through the process. And we have a video walkthrough.

The Ballynahatty Neolithic Female

The oldest sample is a Neolithic female found in the townland of Ballynahatty, on the southern side of Belfast, Northern Ireland. The remains are dated to about 5,200 years old.

I’ve pinned the location in this map to show where we’re talking about.

Researchers say that this woman had brown eyes and black hair. When comparing her genetic makeup to modern humans, she is most akin to people of Spain and Sardinia. But her DNA also points to ancestors from the Middle East.

The Rathlin Island Bronze Age Males

Rathlin Island is further north, off the coast of Antrim, Northern Ireland. People still live there, which makes it the most northern inhabited island off the coast of the island of Ireland.

These three male specimens date back to the Bronze age. They are dated from three to four thousand years old.

Unlike the Ballynahatty female, these men had genetic variants for blue eyes. They also have the most common Y type found in the modern Irish population. The DNA point to ancestors from the Pontic Steppes.

Evidence for Mass Migration Into Ireland

Dr Lara Cassidy of Trinity College Dublin says that modern Celts are closer to the Rathlin Island men than the Ballynahatty woman.

Genetic affinity is strongest between the Bronze Age genomes and modern Irish, Scottish and Welsh.

Professor Dan Bradley of Trinity points out that these genomes show evidence of a wave of migration into the island of Ireland.

There was a great wave of genome change that swept into Europe from above the Black Sea into Bronze Age Europe and we now know it washed all the way to the shores of its most westerly island.

Just in case you’re puzzled by Professor Bradley’s Irish fondness for verbal flair – the “most westerly island of Europe” is, indeed, Ireland.

3. Set The Minimum Threshold To 3 cM

If you don’t set a threshold, the default 7 cM will be used. You will probably not get any shared DNA at that level.

4. Compare Your DNA!

Hit the Compare button and scroll down the display to find any shared DNA.

How Do You Compare With Me?

I share 3.3 cM with the Ballynahatty female on chromosome #15.

I share 4.8 cM with Rathlin Man 1 on chromosome #18.

There is no shared DNA above 3 cM between myself and the other two Rathlin Island specimens.

Be Cautious With Small Segments Of DNA

It’s important not to draw conclusions or make too much out of such small segments of DNA. At these low levels, the reason for matching segments could be due to chance.

Our article on matching archaic DNA matches has a section on low thresholds of shared DNA. I discuss inheritance by chance, by common ancestor, and by population. It’s worth a read if you’re not familiar with these terms.

I’ll repeat here that examining these ancient DNA samples is for pure curiosity and fascination. I simply marvel at the fact that I can compare DNA to people born on the same island as me – thousands of years ago.

      • Hello, I live in the USA, my father was adopted, but we know his mother’s maiden name was Cunningham and dna research says I’m Irish. My results:

    • Running the Ancient data tool I show at 0.5, 1 and 2cm connection with some/all 4 but it has all but disappeared with only Rathlin1 remaining at 2cm then gone by 3cm. This means that when I run the one to one I get no match at all. Disappointing somewhat but reassuring that these are my strongest (greatest matches) on all the Archaic data groups.

    • Hi, my mother also matches Ballynatty woman on ch.23, 4.3 cM on two points, overall 8.6 cM’s. I’m fascinated because this is the X chromosome which mothers pass on to daughters. She also matches her on ch.4 and 19 with smaller cM’s.

    My mother is mainly Irish/English, where as I have a chunk of Sicilian/Chilean ( originally from Spain)
    But what is truly mind-blowing is your link mentioned that one of the Bronze Males carried the mutation for Haemochromatosis (Iron overload) and the Ballynahatty woman also carried a variant for H associated with increased risk. I actually have that increased risk variation which is aggressive. My mother is a carrier.

      The haemochromatosis gene is more prevalent with Irish heritage, one in five modern Irish are carriers.

  9. I’m Australian, but have Irish ancestry from all four of my grandparents, some probably more recent as they were protestants and some from older Irish family lines. All up about 25% of my DNA is Irish. The rest is Scottish and English

    Weird, buy maybe relevant that my mum’s matches are on 2 Chromosomes.

    The description fits her to a tee – black hair, brown eyes, regularly mistaken for Mediterranean origin when she was young.

    Her dad was (recently discovered), almost 75% Irish – records patchy – Taylors from Antrim, Johnston’s, Kings from same and Belfast area. I have DNA evidence of ancestors that went to the US – to a Samuel Taylor (1700).

  16. Very interesting. Is it true that the Rathlin 1 man has most connection with the modern population of Ireland?

    I share 44.8 cms with him over 10 chromosomes (11 segs): largest segment 6.6.

    This is mostly on my mothers side but I must have some from my (Cornish plus 1/4 Irish) father’s side also – as my mother’s match to Rathlin 1 is slightly less than me at 33.9 cms.

    My paternal haplogroup also matches the Longniddry L1066 ancient DNA sample (East Lothian Scotland).

  22. I am an American mongrel, A657252. Both of my mother’s parents were adopted, so we never knew much about her family, but we did know that red hair has come up a few times in her family, including my son, plus my own beard is red (while the rest of my hair is brown), so we always figured we had some Irish or Scottish heritage. Based on recent ancestry research using my grandmother’s birth certificate, I have been able to confirm both Irish & Scottish, many many generations back in the deep hills of Kentucky.

    • The individual segments are more indicative than summing them up. But 5.7 cm is a higher segment size than I have with any of the specimens.

  28. I have Irish/Scottish/Welsh/Scandinavian/East European/Middle Eastern. My father is Irish/Scottish/Scandinavian/Baltic.
    My father’s mother and her brother were very dark skinned, Black hair, but my Grandmother had very Blue eyes!… and the rest of the siblings and their parents had Sandy fair hair and fair skin. Another who inherited the very dark skin and hair was the only child and daughter of my Grandmother’s brother who also had the same colouration. My Grandmother’s family immigrated in the late 1800’s from Ireland. My father’s Paternal Scottish side also had dark skin and hair however NOT as dark as his Irish mother, Uncle and this Uncle’s daughter.
    The Mystery of where the Dark skin and Hair of my Grandmother, her brother and his daughter ‘is still a Mystery. She used to get asked if she was West Indian or Maori.

    Migration patterns fascinate me. I am predominantly English with no known Irish ancestry at all, though I do have one grandparent from Lithuania. My English grandfather thought his surname was of Viking origin.

  33. This is quite interesting! I have run 3 kits and none have matches to the 2nd or 3rd males.
    The first kit, my mother-in-law, whose grandparents were from Antrim, has 9 shared segments with the Ballynahatty female, the largest being 4.1 cM.
    Her son has 5 shared segments, the largest being 8 cM. (He does have Irish ancestors on his father’s side.)
    I have 3 matches to the female, the largest being 3.8 cM. 1/2 of my immediate ancestors are from southern Ireland.

    Our matches with the first male:
    m-i-l 7 shared segs, largest being 4.7 cM

I hope that someone realizes that F999800 has DNA from the c15 region 27-30M that is excess IBD per “Relationship Estimation from Whole-Genome Sequence Data” by Ling et al (2014) https://journals.plos.org/plosgenetics/article?id=10.1371/journal.pgen.1004144 (Table 3 “Genomic Regions in hg19 coordinates of at least 5-to-expected IBD of at least 4-fold”).

    I find this very interesting that such an ancient kit has this excess IBD region. I hope someone will follow up with research on that and see if they can make some sense out of it — or determine if it is just a fluke of so many generations of genetic recombinations.

    With F999800, the Rathlin Bronze Age male 1, I share a total of 36.9 cM – the largest segment being 6.2 cM, chromosome 15

    With Rathlin Bronze Age male 2, it’s a share of only 3.5 cM, chromosome 13

    And I share none with Rathlin Bronze Age male 3.

    Interesting – but does it meaning anything?

    • Does it mean anything? Good question.
      With current technology – with these low segments, all we can say for sure is that we’re all human! The lower the segment size, the higher the possibility that this is Identity By Chance. Genealogically, we are usually looking for a common ancestor with our DNA matches and that’s something that we cannot determine i.e. Identity By Descent.
      The other possibility is that its Identity By Population i.e. the common DNA is prevalent in a particular community or region and has passed down to modern times. Right now, we can’t determine between these three possibilities. That may change with future technology and analysis.

  43. This looks like some actual possibilitities. Though individual matches are quite small, there are a lot of them. MyHeritage claims 27% Irish, Scottish, and Welsh. No one else puts it that high; Ancestry thinks 10% Welsh, 6% Irish; 23andMe says total 15.9% all Celtic AND British. Looking at actual paper-trail locations, a big part of the Welsh is from Anglesey, near Holyhead, just across the water from Ireland. Most of my DNA is not from the UK.

    I have NO match with Rathlins 2 and 3. They do not overlap each other with mine. Here are my matches with the lady and with Rathlin 1:

I find this whole field fascinating – but despite the tidal wave of archaeological DNA being documented now, it’s just not getting through to places like GedMatch where the average person can compare. Felix’s amazing effort pioneered this, but he stopped. Matt picked up with the Irish results, but he hasn’t blogged since 2016.

    The really old DNA will be in frustratingly short sequences, but, for example, sequences from London plague-pits might stand a good chance at being in genealogically useful lengths.

    I tried dipping my toes in this stuff a year or so ago, but got overwhelmed quickly with the terminology (file conversion stuff). It seems like it ought to be relatively straight-forward – if someone laid out the process. Are you someone who could blog this? Or are there reasons why, perhaps GedMatch would prefer it didn’t happen? Cheers, Mike

    • I did tinker with the tools that are still on Felix website, but this isn’t my wheelhouse either.
      I assume Verogen (the company who bought Gedmatch) are neutral about it or they’d take down the Archaic Ancestors link. Much of the website is a collection of research projects and sometimes the researchers move on (taking their documentation with them).

  45. I don’t understand how, with one odd exception, not a single one of my matches with this Irish DNA match in any way with the matches of my mother, father, father’s sister, father’s cousin and mother’s cousin have. How does this work?

    That one exception is with F999800 Rathlin Bronze Age Male 1
    My one fragment in common with my father’s (phased) DNA both end at the same point.
    Me: Chr 1 11,797,186-13,176,463 3.6 cM 302 SNPs
    Father: Chr 1 11,922,298-13,176,463 3.2 cM 231 SNPs

    So my match is longer than my father’s, and my matches on two other chromosomes are not in either my mother or father.

    I see other people are getting similar results.

  48. I have no Irish ancestry as far back as my paper trail goes (i.e. roughly mid 18th century) but one half of my family is from south and central Wales, so I would expect there to be some similarity and indeed there is.

    I share 24.8 cM with Rathlin Bronze Age Male 1, with the largest segment being 5.7 cM:

  66. Well I’m still a little bit confused how I could be related to this very ancient human from Irish while I’m not even an European. I’m a native of north Borneo in southeast Asia. I just uploaded my DNA file to GED match just to find out more about the origin of my people when i stumble upon this information. I’m also had a 4 percent Baltic DNA, and another 4.9 percent from east Meditrerranean

    • If you have low cm matches, then this can be due to chance nature of inheritance. Also, many modern Irish people will have low connections to thes ancient samples. We are looking at periods of migration of peoples across continents.
      If you’re interested in more recent times (e.g. within ten generations), then this won’t be much use to you. You wan want to start playing with the gedmatch admixture calculators – but remember they are also focused on ancient eras (neolithic etc).
      For more recent ethnicity research, you’re better off with the estimates given by your DNA test provider (Ancestry? MyHeritage?). But you might have the same problem as I do with my half-African heritage – none of the DNA sites are currently great for non-European heritage.

    Just discovered GEDmatch and have discovered a lot which I am finding very fascinating.

    Closest matches were:

    Rathlin1 @ 4 segments with the largest at 6.1 cM. Total half match segments 18.3 cM. Ballynahatty @ 4 segments with the largest at 4.5 cM. Total half match segments 14.2 cM. No shared segments with the other 2 males.

    This is intriguing because my DNA is Portuguese and Spanish dominate. This is the juice I have been searching for.

  75. I have Irish ancestors maternal and paternal from central Ireland – Cork, Limerick, and Tipperary. When I used the GEDMATCH ancient ancestors tool, the Rathlin 1 and Balynahatty showed the most small matches at .5, compared to any other ancient DNA. I have several segments over 5 cm in common with Rathlin 1, and a couple over 2 cm with Balynahatty. At one point a DNA site showed me having Sardinian ancestors (which I do not), but given that Balynahatty is similar to current Sardinian and Spanish populations, I now see where that signal came from. I carry a copy of the hemochromatosis gene.

    One line was from Dreenan, Co. Derry, Northern Ireland.
    My 2 sisters and I have Gedmatch kits. We are very different in our appearance. I have medium brown hair, fair skin and dark blue eyes. One sister (sister 1) has very pale blue eyes, blonde curly hair and good complexion. My other sister (sister 2) looks quite Spanish, she has hazel eyes, dark brown hair and olive skin.

    At 3cm I match the Rathlin1 male on 5 chromosomes, 2,6,7,8 and 9.

    My best match is at 6 cms, I still match El Portalón (Spain), potential match to the Basque people. And yes I have Rh – blood type.

    • the lower the number, the more likely is that this is due to the random nature of inheritance. I would tend to discount anything below 7 cM. But 9.9 cM on Chr 1 is high compared to many other people who have commented. In terms of what it means – it’s purely a matter of interest to see how much DNA we modern humans may share with these ancient DNA samples. In some small cases, researchers have been able to tie a direct descent to older samples, but these archaic samples are so far back, its difficult to draw conclusions.

    I do have matches for Rathlin 2 & 3 on the Ancient DNA but they must be under 3cM because they do not show on the One to One Autosomnal results.

    Last year on Ancestry ethnicity I had 11% Ireland but on their latest update no Irish but some Scottish. I have traced a very probable Irish ancestor back to 1798 marrying in Manchester Cathedral. His name was Patrick Keely and his wife was Catherine Fox. Very interesting to see I really do have Irish ancestry.

  92. Surprizing or not? I’m a Dutchman with mostly Dutch and German ancestry. My Y-DNA is R-Z8 (below the R-U106 branch, which is a part of the R1b haplogroup). My mtDNA is J1c. I wouln’t have thought I would have a match with these Irish samples, but I do. I match two ancient Irish samples:

    at 3 cM treshold (F999800 already is showing at a 6 cM treshold):

    F999800 (Rathlin1 Ireland 2.0ky cal BC): Largest segment = 5.8 cM. Total Half-Match segments (HIR) 28.4cM (0.793 Pct). 6 shared segments found for this comparison.

    F999805 (Ballynahatty Ireland 3.2ky cal BC): Largest segment = 4.8 cM. Total Half-Match segments (HIR) 4.8cM (0.133 Pct). 1 shared segments found for this comparison.

    I assume my R1b heritage from North West Europe is the cause of these matches. I don’t think these matches show that I’m related, but I do believe I share ancestors with these persons.

I don’t know if it’s significant in anyway, but I think it is interesting that so many who have given ancestry from the more northern regions of Ireland seem to have far more shared DNA with Rathlin 1.

    This is fascinating! I’m Irish, (both parents are from Limerick), all my great grandparents are from Munster and all my ancestors that I’ve traced to the late 1600s are from Munster/Connacht.
    Ancestry DNA result = 100% Irish (and almost 100% of that is Munster), so I thought I would have more shared DNA with the Rathlin male than the Ballynahatty female, according to what has been said about the modern Irish population, but it’s the other way around. (?!) My results are:

    Chr 6: 4.1 cM
    Chr 16: 3.2 cM
    Chr 17: 5.0 cM

    I also find it interesting that no one at all seems to share any DNA with the other two Rathlin males. I wonder why is that?

  100. I have a heavy mix of Gallowglass Irish, Ulster Scots and lowland Scottish ancestry. It seems my ancestors migrated between Ireland and Scotland every couple hundred years.

    I shared with Ballynahatty woman 2 segments 3.4cm and 3.7cm
    and with Rathlin man 1 – 3 segments 3.6cm, 5.4cm and 4.0 cm

    BTW my g-g-grandmother was an O’Brien from Dromoland in Co. Clare so I ran yours too
    and we have 1 segment 4.6cm

    I have a lot of O’Brien ancestry, I can trace back to Brian Boru in 17 lines. Genealogist call it pedigree collapse, most folks call it inbreeding and the Irish Protestant gentry really kept it in the family.

    • I was playing around with the archaic DNA again and was using the Q matching function. With Rathlin 1 I have a Q score of 132 for a 5.35cm segment. If I googled this right that is a very high certainty.

    • Be careful not to focus too much on the total cM, as this can be misleading.
      Those matching segments of 3.1 and 3.2 are so small that Ancestry, 23andMe, and MyHeritage will not include them when calculating your list of DNA relatives. This is because of the higher probability that they are due to chance.
      So, I wouldn’t say that these are strong matches. However, it’s interesting to see these small segments across multiple chromosomes, you certainly have more than I do.

    • Pedigree collapse. If the DNA from this ancient person is part of the modern gene pool, many of these segments may be identical by population. May not be from this person though.

  110. I have not done the comparison yet, and confess that I did not read all of the comments, but at least in the first 15 or more, I noticed that nobody matched with number 2 and 3 Bronze Age males! Very curious! Kind of makes me wonder about the accuracy of this whole thing.
    What are your thoughts about the lack of matches to those two?

    • Due to the nature of inheritance, we don’t share any DNA with some of our great-great-great grandparents. So it’s not surprising that the DNA of some of the individuals isn’t appearing now, even in very small amounts.

  114. Mum has 8 shared segments with Rathlin man 1, largest is 5.3, total is 32.1. She shares just one segment with Ballynahatty female.
    Dad’s sister shares 8 segments with Rathlin female also. Largest segment 5.7, total 30.4cm. She shares 5 segments with Ballynahatty female, 3.8 largest, total 16.5. Ancestry highlights County Antrim as one area she shares most DNA with.

    According to Ancestry I’m 98% Irish and 2% Scottish. My ancestors are from all over Ireland… counties Kerry, Cork, Waterford, Wexford, Longford, Galway and possibly county Tyronne. There are a few ancestors from Ireland that I have not figured out where in Ireland they were born. On every branch of my family tree there is someone who left Ireland and moved the U.S. beginning about 1850 continuing on to the 1920’s.

    I’m quite new to GEDmatch and ancient DNA concept, therefore, just for fun I decided to run the numbers from my DNA kits and those of the Irish ancestors’ kits. I did not expect any matches, as I am an ethnic Bulgarian for at least 5 generations, and based on historical specifics, I did not expect any matches from beyond the Balkans.

    Yet, I matched with Ballinahatty female Chr. X 6.9cM and Chr. 1 Autosomal 3.1cM. I also have matches with Rathlin Male 1: from Ancestry kit (Chr 2 and Chr 4 with total HIR 10.5cM) and MyHeritage kit (Chr 4 and Chr 21 with total HIR 9.3cM). Zero matches with the other two Rathlin men.

    How to interpret these results in context of human migrations? Is it a proof of Westward migration of ancient humans, or are these markers “brought” to the Balkans with Eastward migration? MyHeritage DNA ethnicity estimate gives me 5% Irish, Scottish, Welsh; I guess the second option is more likely.

    • Remember, these are very small levels of centimorgans and are in the region where the matches could be due to chance (random nature of inheritance). So, they can’t be taken as a level of proof. Treat them as fun and thought-provoking!

      • May I ask one more question: if the ancient DNA is of a person who has lived 3- 4- 5000 years ago, shouldn’t be expected the matching segments to be very small size, after generations and generations of splitting? Wouldn’t be strange if any DNA code over 7-10cM has “survived” unchanged after 5000 years?

  127. After reading this article, I ran my results through the utility on Gedmatch. For the Ballynahatty woman, I have 4.4 on Chr 21, 3.9 on Chr 22. On the Rathlin men, I have 4.1 on Chr 10, no shared matches to other two. Ran my former husband’s through, got 6.8 on Chr 22 with Ballynahatty woman, and 4.2 on Chr 12. He had for Rathlin man #1, 4.9 on Chr 5, 3.4 on Chr 5, 3.3 on Chr 6,and 3.8 on Chr 21. No matches on other two. Endlessly fascinating.
