Last names from Gale to Gallivan

The most common name in this section is Gallegos, which we’ve covered in more depth in our list of Hispanic last names starting with G.

We’ll look at Gale instead, which has over fifteen thousand bearers in the 2010 U.S. census.

The name has several origins in different regions. The English origins are from the Middle English word for jovial or merry.

In contrast, the Portuguese origins derive from a word that means a ship of war.

Last names from Gallman to Gamez

The most common name in this section is Galvan with over fifty thousand bearers in the 2010 U.S. census.

The name is Spanish in origin, and the meaning isn’t certain.

Gamble is another relatively common name here, with spelling variations of Gambill and Gamel. I looked into this one because it is in my direct family line.

The origins in England are from the Old Norse variant of Gamall, which means “old”. It may have been conferred on older travellers.

The Germanic origins are from the Old High German word for “joyous” or “playful”.

Names from Gamino to Gaona

Gannon is the most common name in this section and its origins are Irish. As I will be preparing a separate list of Irish names, I’ll look at another here.

Gant has over 14 thousand bearers in the 2010 U.S. census. There are several theories about its origins.

The English origins may derive from the Old French for a glove, so that the name was bestowed on glove makers and their descendants.

It is also a Germanic name, and the origins may come from people living in the several towns of that name in German regions.

Names from Garabedian to Gariepy

With over a million bearers in America, Garcia is by far the most popular name in this section. Our list of Hispanic names starting with G goes into more details.

I’ll look here at Gardner and its less common variants of Gardener and Gardiner.

The most obvious explanation is that this is an English occupational name given to people who tended gardens and country estates.

Another theory points to the Saxon word for a spear (“gar”). Of course, both origins could be true.

Names from Garland to Garst

Garrett is the most common name in this section with about 110 thousand bearers in the 2010 U.S. census.

I mentioned the Saxon word “gar” in the previous section and gave its meaning as a spear. We can also look to this as the origins for Garrett as an English name bestowed upon a warrior.

Garretson is one of the variants in the list, and simply means a son of the warrior.

The most common name in this section is Garza, which we’ve covered in our list of Hispanic names starting with G.

Instead, I’ll look at Gates which has about a third of the bearers with about 52 appearances in the 2010 U.S. census.

This is what’s known as a topographic name, in that it refers to features of the terrain that people lived or worked in. Gates is of English origin and was conferred on people who lived near the gates of a walled town in medieval times.

Surnames from Gear to Gerry

There are very few names in America that are only three letters, and the name Gee has a few thousand holders in the United States.

This may be of Irish origins from the name McGee.

But George is by far the most common name in this section, with nearly 130 thousand U.S. bearers in 2010.

Variants of the name are found across Europe, and it is also found in American communities that originate from Southern India.

There are religious connotations from the legend of St George slaying a dragon, and the name spread throughout the Crusades.

Names from Gerson to Gillihan

Gibson is the most common name in this section with about 180 thousand bearers in the 2010 U.S. census.

This means “son of Gib”. It originates from a shortened form of Gilbert, which is derived from the Old German word for a noble youth.

If you scan your eye down the list, you’ll notice that there are lots of variants of Gib.

Geyer is an interesting Germanic name with nearly eight thousand bearers in the census.

The name is Germanic and originates in the German word for a vulture. It may have been bestowed on the families of people who gained their wealth from preying on others.

It may also have been adopted from people from the town of Geyer in the kingdom of Saxony (in Germany).

Names from Gilliland to Glendenning

When Gilmore is combined with its variants of Gilmour, Gilmore, and Gilmer, it has well over fifty thousand appearances in the 2010 U.S. census.

This is a Celtic name which I’ll explain in our list of Irish names.

I’ll look instead at Gipson with nearly twenty thousand bearers. The name means the “son of Gip” or the closely related Gibb.

The origins of Gibb are from medieval times where it was a shortened version of the name Gilbert. This is a Norman name derived from the Old German term for a noble youth.

Glass has over forty thousand bearers and is an occupation name conferred on glass blowers.

Surnames from Glenn to Golub

This section has one of the few two-letter names that ranks in the census. Go has multiple origins in different regions.

The Japanese origins come from the word for “village”. The Indonesian origins are less clear.

But Go only has a few thousand bearers in the census. In contrast, Glover is the most common name in this section.

The name has English origins and is derived from the Middle English word for a glove. It was conferred on glove makers or traders who sold them.

Names from Gouge to Graziano

Gray is the most common name in this section with nearly 250 thousand bearers in the U.S. census of 2010. The name “Grayson” is simply the son of Gray.

The origins in England refer to gray-haired people or those who had reached an advanced age (for those times).

The French origins may be from people who lived in towns of the same name.

Another common name is Graham, which has just over 200 thousand bearers. The English origins are from a place called Grantham in Linconshire. You’ll also find Grantham in this section.

Grant is another common name with over 142 thousand bearers. It was popular in England and Scotland after the Normans arrived. The name derives from the Old French word for a big person.

Names from Greaney to Grimaldo

Gren is the most common name in this section. Combined with the variant of Greene, they had over five hundred thousand bearers in the 2010 U.S. census.

There are several origins for this English name. It was given to people who lived near the village green (the centre of a village that would hold a market).

It may also have simply been conferred on families who were mainly attired in green clothing.

Griffin had just under two hundred thousand bearers. It has several origins from different regions.

The Welsh form is related to Griffith, a common first name.

The English origins are from the Middle English term for a mythical creature known as a griffin. This was conferred on fierce warriors.
