Let me say a bit more about Saint Martin of Tours, whose popularity spread the name in the Middle Ages.
Martin was a Roman soldier stationed in France. The legend goes that he met a shivering beggar and cut his own cloak in two to help the man. Martin later became a bishop.
Remnants of the cloak became a holy relic revered by the kings of the Franks. It became a very popular French family surname.
