Names from Varnell to Veatch

The most common names in this section are Hispanic, which we’ve covered in our separate Hispanic list.

The name variants of Vaughn and Vaughan together had over one hundred thousand bearers in the 2010 census. Vaughn (without the a) is more popular.

These names are of Welsh origin. They are derived from the Welsh word “bach”, which means little. This was often given to the son of a father when they share the same first name.

I’ll also take a closer look at Varner, which had over eighteen thousand bearers in the 2010 U.S. census.

Varner has Germanic origins. There are several theories around its origins. One theory says that it’s a variant of the name Warner, which was brought into England by the Normans.

The meaning comes from the words for army and guard. This could refer to a soldier.
